Recipient's Name:  Landry Smith

School:  Hespeler Public School

Grade: Junior and Senior Kindergarten

Number of Years Teaching: 17

  • Landry Smith is in his 17th year of teaching.  For most of his career he taught grade six.  For the past two years he has been teaching Junior and Senior Kindergarten at Hespeler Public School.

Landry says that he was motivated to teach junior and senior kindergarten because he has little people at home and felt that he knew what parents wanted for their children as they entered school.  JK and SK are key times for parents and children.  Parents are entrusting their precious ones to a teacher.  He sees it as his job to make school a positive and happy place to come to.  He wants his students to feel good about themselves, their ideas and their work habits.  They have 14 long years in the school system and Landry wants to create in them a love for learning and for school.

He loves JK and SK kids and says that "he would freeze kids there!"  His students beam when he tells them that they shine.  They are unbelievably honest about their lives.  In JK and SK there are little victories every day.  Landry says, "There are so many students who are excellent.  It is my role to bring that excellence out."

Marsha, a parent of one of Landry's students wrote this:

I believe that Mr. Landry is a deserving and dedicated teacher to all of his students.  My child has special needs and he goes the distance to accommodate her needs and never complains about the time it takes to do this.  He treats her the same as other students and makes them all feel special in their own way.  My daughter fell so far behind last year so she basically had to do JK and SK in one year.  Mr. Landry has helped her be successful instead of pushing her aside.  He enjoys having her in his class.

The best example I can give is when her EA was ill and there wasn't anyone else to help her.  He took it upon himself to assist her when needed in class.  Even though he had no idea how to put her braces on, he never gave up.  He kept trying.

He truly believed in my daughter as well as in all the children in his class.
