Recipient: Wayne Miedema

Wayne Miedema has been teaching for 11 years.  Two years in Mozambique, 6 years at Guelph Correctional and the last 3 at Adult Open Door where he teaches reading, writing, numeracy and computer.

Wayne praises his adult students for the courage they have to return to school and begin to overcome adversity.  He is very aware that they have endured more stress in their lives then he ever will.  He works diligently to create a safe place for them to develop, grow, learn and ‘unfold’.  His is a classroom of love, respect and encouragement.

Wayne is motivated to empower his adult learners to be part of the decisions that impact their lives.  He helps them learn about systems, rights and resources that will lead them towards independence and hopefully better lives. These learners have been crushed by labels and life experiences…Wayne’s desire is to help them rewrite attainable and meaningful goals and to give them the encouragement they need to succeed.

Angela was one of many who nominated Wayne.  She wrote:

I tried to go back to school before and it did not go well.  Then I met Wayne, what a teacher! He treats everyone with respect and builds up our confidence so we can improve our lives.  Wayne loves to teach and help people fit into the world.  Helping people read and write means a lot to people that have that problem.  If I would have had a teacher like Wayne when I was in school, I would have had my grade 12 and a good job.

Wayne is one of the best things that happened to me.  I can now read and write which has opened many doors for me.  I can now read my mail, my prescriptions and use a computer.  I have new hope that I will accomplish my goals.  Wayne loves and cares for us just as if we were his family.  He has given us the gift of learning and enjoying school.
