Jeff looks at his role as teacher as an opportunity to prepare students for the next phase of life. In math class he shows them where math fits into real life and helps them to see its value.
Jeff believes that learning needs to be fun so he creates great activities so his students anticipate coming to class. He sees Grade 8’s as almost adults so talking ‘life’ and having a personal connection is one of Jeff’s goals. To see the “light” go on in his students motivates him towards creativity and connection.
Jeff values partnering with parents. He says, “I am one in the trio and we all need to communicate.”
The Houde Family values Jeff’s communication with them. They wrote:
We have three children and all were fortunate to be taught by Mr. Whicher in their grade 8 year. Jeff has been an inspiration to all of them. So much so that two of the three are considering a teaching career so they can “teach” like Mr. Whicher.
Mr. Whicher is a teacher that is seen by the children as being fair, willing to listen to their side of the story, and always available for extra help or simply to listen. He has also organized many of their major school activities.
As parents we have watched our children grow under his guidance. He has always treated these young teens as the young adults that they are, never talking down to them or making them feel inadequate. He has a gift of bringing out the very best in each child. As for innovation, he was the only teacher to communicate by email, which is something we find invaluable.
