Inspiration/Motivation for being a teacher of
excellence:
We were able to track down Greg while he was coaching the
Senior Boys Volleyball team. For the three days before that he was backpacking
with 27 students in Algonquin Park introducing them to camping and science in
nature. Greg is an involved teacher who draws inspiration from his mother who
was a teacher and from his love of sharing science with his students. He
himself loves to learn and is highly motivated to keep learning as his students
ask questions and dig deep into Physics. Greg also loves to give students
experiences that they have not had before. He sees his students as energetic
and eager learners and loves to see them sparkle as they become more and more
eager to continue learning. A couple of years ago Greg took time off to write
science text books. Though he learned much from this experience his absence
from the students and the classroom reminded him of just how much he really
loves to teach.
Our selection committee couldnt help but smile as we read
several nomination letters about Greg
he seems famous for teaching friction by
doing headstands for the class. Gregs winning nomination letter comes from his
former student who wrote:
I have never seen another teacher as involved in high
school life as Mr. Dick. The spirit of GCI is found throughout everything he
does and this spirit forces students and fellow teachers to participate in and
succeed in their every endeavor. The one aspect of Mr. Dicks teaching ability
that sets him apart from the rest is his ability to make his students feel like
they can achieve anything. He is always interested in our hopes and dreams and
he will try his best to push us in the correct direction. Many a student has
walked through the halls of GCI and has been led down the path of success
because of Mr. Dicks influential teaching style. Mr. Dick creates an
atmosphere of involvement and success that acts like a magnet, knowingly,
drawing the best qualities out of every student he meets.
